According to Gartner, global public cloud computing end-user spending is projected to hit $494.7 billion (USD) in 2022. Amazon Web Services (AWS) leads the industry with a commanding 33% market share. In contrast, Microsoft Azure holds 21%, while Google Cloud trails with just 8%.
However, these figures are not set in stone. Cloud adoption has surged, particularly during the pandemic, with IT budgets increasingly funneled into cloud computing. Today, 94% of enterprises, regardless of size, utilize at least one cloud service, with larger firms leveraging an average of five services.
The primary driver for cloud adoption remains the ability to access data from anywhere, aligning with our increasingly interconnected world. For instance, in Canada, where internet penetration is highest among G20 nations, 35% of businesses are shifting applications to the cloud to enhance reliability and security.
A notable trend is the growing reliance of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) on cloud services. The scalability and lower capital investment required make cloud services especially attractive to SMBs. AWS is the preferred cloud provider for 53% of SMBs, though this figure has dropped from 60% in 2018, potentially indicating a rise in Microsoft Azure's popularity.
In 2022, Azure has made significant strides in closing the cloud spend gap. A Flexera survey revealed that 52% of respondents spend $1.2 million or more annually on both Azure and AWS. AWS generated $18.44 billion in Q1 of this year, a 36.5% year-over-year growth, while Azure's revenue reached $19.05 billion.
AWS remains a leader in serverless computing, with 74% of users preferring AWS Lambda over Azure Functions, which holds a mere 39% preference. AWS also excels in containerization, with 60% of back-end developers using Docker containers. Gartner predicts that 75% of enterprise applications will be containerized by the end of 2022. In this arena, Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes leads with a 39% share, followed by Azure Kubernetes Service at 23%.
Despite Azure's rapid growth, AWS continues to attract 52% of early-stage cloud users and remains agile in adapting to evolving customer needs. While Azure and Google Cloud are gaining ground, AWS is poised to maintain its leadership as more companies embrace cloud technology.
